Essential steps in Logo Designing

Take a look at the most well known logos around the world and you’ll see the most memorable logos are invariably simple and clean, yet effective. There are many logos that strike us the moment we see it, like Nike’s “swoosh”. It is always good to rope in the best designer while working on logo. Always remember complex designs are difficult to remember, where as the simple once are always easy to recall.

Like most designing process, a logo designing starts with the clients brief. In the client briefs, a designer should ask all the relevant questions, “what the client is looking for”, “what sort of business they are into”, “who are their customers”, “what about the competition” etc. It’s important to have a thorough understanding of the business the client is into, without which a designer can only come up with irrelevant design, which will be of no use to the client.

After receiving a thorough brief from the client, the designer should come up with some sample sketches, just to get a fair idea about where one is heading. It’s always good to spend some time thinking. It’s just impossible to come up with the final sketch in one go, it’s always good to create few options, prod some more, get some feedback from colleagues and finally coming up with few sketches, and show it to the clients.

If your client is happy with your brief sketch, that means you are heading in the right direction. The next step is to decide on the size of the logo. The size of the logo is one of the most important factors, a size which will ensure that it ‘fits the bill’ in all aspects of business, be it letter head or a big hoarding. The quality and visual factor of a logo should not be compromised in any size.

The next important step in creating a logo is deciding on the colour combination. This one is probably the trickiest of the entire step, as it can either boost or spoil the appeal factor of your logo. A logo should have an aesthetic appeal, which is equally relevant to the core of the business it is associated with. Also it’s important to make sure that the logo looks pleasing in black and white background. Apart from colour, another important element is the font of the text. It’s always good to try your design with a number of fonts before coming up with the final samples.

Finally, after going through the important steps above, a designer can look to enhance the final logo and add some artistic appeal to the logo, essentially to make it look subtly unique. Talk with the clients and incorporate necessary changes until you make atleast few samples. It’s always good to study the logos of competitors to get a better understanding of what exactly the client wants. Finally, add your creative touch to make it unique.
